The Tamirabharani – Karumeniyar – Nambiyar River linking scheme is a landmark initiative set to be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on February 7, 2025. The Tamirabharani – Karumeniyar – Nambiyar River linking project is a critical step in Tamil Nadu’s water management strategy. It involves the construction of a 73-km-long flood carrier channel, designed to redirect surplus water from the Tamirabharani river to the drier regions of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. Financial Aspects
The total investment for this monumental initiative is pegged at ₹900 crore. The Tamil Nadu government has procured funds through borrowing, with a clear plan to repay the costs through revenue generated from the project’s impact. Historical Context
The origins of this project trace back to 2011, but various delays stalled its progress. Between 2009 and 2011, 50% of the work had been completed under an initial budget of ₹205 crore. Now, under the leadership of the current government, the project has been revived with renewed vigor to ensure its completion.
Water Management Strategy
A key feature of the scheme is the efficient use of 13,000 million cubic feet (mcft) of surplus water from the Tamirabharani river. This water will be diverted at the third anaicut (a dam-like structure) and channeled through the existing Kannadian canal, covering a distance of 37 km. This strategy aims to optimize water distribution and provide much-needed irrigation support to the targeted areas.
Infrastructure Developments
As part of the project, a new barrage is planned 6.4 km downstream of the third anaicut to facilitate additional water diversion. This infrastructure will enhance the efficiency of the canal system, ensuring reliable irrigation for agricultural lands in the region.
Beneficiary Impact
The scheme promises significant socio-economic benefits. Over 30,000 beneficiaries are set to receive welfare measures amounting to ₹203.71 crore during the inauguration ceremony. Future Prospects
The river linking project is expected to be completed within the next six months. Upon completion, it will benefit an estimated 50,000 hectares of land, resolving long-standing water scarcity issues.
