In a world grappling with the environmental and ethical challenges of traditional leather production, two Mexican entrepreneurs, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, have emerged as trailblazers. Founders of Adriano Di Marti, they created Desserto—a groundbreaking vegan leather alternative derived from the humble nopal cactus (prickly pear). Launched after two years of intensive research and development, Desserto not only mimics the luxurious look, feel, and durability of animal leather but also spares countless animals from harm while drastically reducing the fashion industry’s carbon footprint. Debuting at Milan’s prestigious Lineapelle leather fair in 2019, this innovation has quickly gained traction among eco-conscious brands worldwide, proving that style and sustainability can coexist.
The Inspiring Origin Story: A Chance Meeting Sparks Change
Adrián López Velarde, with a background in politics and economics and experience in furniture and automotive industries, and Marte Cázarez, a graduate in international business from the fashion sector, met serendipitously in 2011 while living in Taiwan. Bonded by their shared birthdate and passion for innovation and environmental care, the duo relocated to Guadalajara, Mexico, where they identified a pressing need for sustainable alternatives in leather-dependent industries. Frustrated by the pollution from animal and synthetic leathers, they left their stable jobs to establish Adriano Di Marti in 2017. Their mission? To develop a cruelty-free material that honors Mexico’s natural resources. Drawing from the resilient nopal cactus—native to Mexico and thriving in arid conditions without irrigation or pesticides—they spent two grueling years experimenting with nanotechnology and molecular bonding to perfect Desserto, nearly facing bankruptcy in the process but emerging with a patented technology that transformed a local plant into a global game-changer.
The Innovative Production Process: From Cactus Leaves to Luxurious Leather
Desserto’s creation begins on the founders’ organic ranch in Zacatecas, Mexico, where nopal cacti are cultivated sustainably using only rainwater—no herbicides, pesticides, or artificial watering required. Mature leaves are harvested every 6-8 months, a process that allows a single plantation to yield crops for up to eight years without depleting the soil. Remarkably, only about three leaves are needed to produce one linear meter of material, and any unused portions are repurposed for Mexico’s food industry, minimizing waste.
The leaves undergo a meticulous transformation: they are first cleaned to remove spines, then mashed into a pulp, sun-dried for three days to preserve natural properties, and finally ground into a fine powder. This powder is blended with a bio-based polymer (90% plant-derived), recycled polyester, and cotton backing, then coated and finished without toxic chemicals like phthalates or PVC. The result is a versatile biopolymer available in various colors, thicknesses, and textures—soft, breathable, elastic, and highly resistant to moisture and abrasion, outperforming traditional leather in durability while feeling just as premium.
Unmatched Sustainability: A Low-Impact Alternative to Conventional Leather
What sets Desserto apart is its eco-friendly profile. The nopal cactus naturally sequesters carbon, with Adriano Di Marti’s 14 acres of farmland absorbing an impressive 8,100 tons of CO2 annually—far offsetting the minimal emissions from production. Unlike animal leather, which guzzles up to 32.95 cubic meters of water per cubic meter of fabric and contributes to deforestation and methane emissions, Desserto requires just 0.02 cubic meters per meter, thanks to the cactus’s drought-resistant nature. It’s partially biodegradable (the cactus component breaks down naturally), free of harmful chemicals, and uses organic pigments for dyeing. By replacing animal-derived products, Desserto helps prevent the slaughter of millions of animals each year for the fashion, automotive, and furniture sectors. Moreover, its production supports local economies, creating around 50 indirect jobs in Guadalajara and promoting healthy, organic agriculture in Mexico.
Versatile Applications: From Fashion to Furniture and Beyond
Desserto’s adaptability has made it a favorite among international brands. In fashion, it’s been adopted by luxury houses for handbags, shoes, and apparel, offering a cruelty-free option that rivals exotic leathers in aesthetics. The automotive industry uses it for durable, easy-to-clean interiors, while furniture makers appreciate its breathability and longevity. Brands like H&M, BMW, and upscale designers have integrated Desserto into their collections, praising its performance in high-wear applications. Available in finishes from matte to embossed, it customizes easily, making it ideal for everything from vegan accessories to car seats.
A Bright Future: Inspiring Global Change
Adrián and Marte’s vision extends beyond production; they actively mentor aspiring sustainable entrepreneurs through speaking engagements and free samples, fostering a ripple effect of innovation. As climate concerns intensify, Desserto positions Mexico as a leader in green technology, potentially revolutionizing the $1.5 trillion global leather market. By turning a desert plant into a symbol of ethical luxury, these entrepreneurs not only save lives—animal and environmental—but also prove that resilience, like the nopal itself, can thrive in the harshest conditions. Desserto isn’t just leather; it’s a legacy of conscious engineering, inviting the world to embrace a more compassionate and sustainable tomorrow.
