The rich legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar, an erstwhile queen of Holkar dynasty, was discussed at length by veterans in a thought-provoking symposium organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad (Awadh Chapter).
They termed her as a role model and an inspiration for all as she made huge contribution to society in bringing social transformation and cultural unity in India. The event was organised on Tuesday at the Munshi Premchand Auditorium in Lucknow, where Manoj Kumar, the National Co secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, addressed the gathering.
Ahilyabai Holkar’s Role in Social Upliftment
Manoj Kumar, during his speech, highlighted that Ahilyabai Holkar was a pivotal figure who brought in social changes in society. She worked relentlessly for the betterment of nomadic communities and initiated the ‘Bhil Kaudi‘ system, specifically aimed at uplifting the Bhil tribe and encouraging them to take up agriculture. A warrior at heart, Ahilyabai would personally visit the battlefield to boost the morale of her soldiers. She also pioneered the formation of an all-women army, breaking traditional gender roles of the time. In terms of governance, she implemented several economic reforms aimed at increasing the state’s revenue. Her visionary approach laid the foundation for sustainable development in industries, trade, and overall economic growth.
A Saintly Queen with a Deep Spiritual Connection
Manoj Kumar emphasised that Ahilyabai Holkar was not only a powerful monarch but also a deeply spiritual figure, often regarded as an incarnation of the divine. Her governance was intertwined with her devotion, evident in her royal decrees that were often signed as ‘Shri Shankar Aagya’ (by the order of Lord Shiva). Her concern for all living beings was reflected in her policies, such as setting aside land for grazing cows and ensuring food was available for birds and fish. Ahilyabai was committed to the welfare of all beings, which made her earn the title of ‘Lokmata’ (Mother of the People), as she was loved and revered by her people.
Cultural Renaissance Under Ahilyabai Holkar
Ahilyabai Holkar’s reign is also noted for her role in cultural revival, especially in restoring pilgrimage sites that were destroyed during the Mughal Empire’s expansion. Dr. Sushil Chandra Trivedi, the National President of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, who presided over the event, highlighted the fact that Ahilyabai’s establishment of smaller, independent states contributed significantly to cultural unity during a time of great political fragmentation. Dr. Trivedi noted that in the past 2,000 years, few individuals have done as much as Ahilyabai to preserve and promote India’s cultural heritage.
Preserving India’s Cultural and Familial Traditions
Dr. Pawan Putra Badal, National Joint Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of preserving India’s familial values and traditions. He warned of the conspiracies aimed at weakening India’s family system, citing the portrayal of toxic relationships in modern TV serials. He emphasized the need to reconnect future generations with their rich cultural heritage, underscoring that the true essence of India lies in its strong family bonds.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Vijay Tripathi, Prant Adhyaksh of the Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, Dwarika Prasad Rastogi, Prant Sachiv, and Dr. Baljeet Kumar Srivastava, along with several other prominent attendees.
Ahilyabai’s Enduring Legacy
Ahilyabai Holkar’s life serves as an enduring beacon of how governance, spirituality, and social reform can go hand in hand. Her efforts in reviving India’s cultural heritage, uplifting marginalized communities, and advancing women’s rights remain inspirational. Her reign is a testament to the power of a just and compassionate ruler who worked for the greater good of society, making her one of India’s most revered leaders.
Ahilyabai Holkar’s legacy continues to inspire future generations, as we remember her not only as a great queen but as a symbol of cultural unity and social progress, said the veteran dignitaries present on the occasion.
