Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to an extraordinary 23-year career representing Portugal. The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on November 5, 2026, through a social media video, confirming that the time had come to hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven jersey to the next generation.
Ronaldo described the decision as an emotional one, reflecting on the journey that began with his international debut in August 2003. In his farewell message, he thanked his family, teammates, coaches, staff and Portuguese supporters for standing by him throughout his career. He said that representing his country had been one of the greatest privileges of his life and that Portugal would always remain a part of him.
Over more than two decades, Ronaldo established himself as one of the most successful players in international football. He made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, holding the world records for the most international appearances and goals in men’s football.
His international journey began when he made his senior debut against Kazakhstan in August 2003, at the age of 18. He first represented Portugal at a major international tournament during UEFA Euro 2004, where the host nation reached the final but lost to Greece.
One of the defining moments of his career came in 2016, when Ronaldo captained Portugal to its first-ever European Championship title. Despite leaving the final against France early due to injury, he remained an influential presence as his team secured a historic 1-0 victory. He further strengthened his legacy by helping Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo also made history at the FIFA World Cup, becoming the first male footballer to score in six different editions of the tournament. The 2026 World Cup in North America marked his sixth and final appearance at the competition. Portugal’s campaign ended in the round of 16 with a defeat against eventual champions Spain.
His retirement announcement came following reported differences with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Tensions emerged during the September international break when Ronaldo was left out of the starting lineup and subsequently left the national team’s training camp. The Portuguese Football Federation imposed a 30-day suspension and a fine following the incident. Ronaldo later acknowledged that leaving the camp was not the right way to handle the situation.
The Portuguese Football Federation expressed deep gratitude and admiration for his contribution, recognising his role in raising Portugal’s profile and inspiring generations of young footballers. It also announced plans to organise a special tribute to celebrate his international career.
Ronaldo’s retirement applies only to international football. He is expected to continue playing at club level for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, where he remains focused on extending his professional career and reaching the milestone of 1,000 career goals.
From a young footballer from Madeira to a global sporting icon, Ronaldo’s journey has been defined by determination, discipline, remarkable consistency and an extraordinary collection of records. Although he will no longer wear Portugal’s number seven jersey, his contribution to the country’s football history will remain significant.
As he steps away from the international stage, Ronaldo leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond goals and trophies, having inspired millions of football fans and aspiring players across generations.
