The world’s largest spiritual gathering, the Kumbh Mela, has commenced in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, drawing millions of devotees from across the globe. While the event is steeped in religious tradition, it is also a stage where spirituality meets individuality, as several ascetics or sages, known as Babas, stand out for their unconventional lifestyles and extraordinary journeys.

This year’s Maha Kumbh Mela offers more than sacred rituals and holy dips—it is a vibrant tapestry of unique narratives that redefine the spiritual ethos of India. From Babas riding Harley Davidsons to IIT graduates choosing ascetic paths, the event is a confluence of faith, modernity, and fascinating human stories.

Icons of Uniqueness at the Maha Kumbh Mela

Chai-Wale Baba

Once a tea seller in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Dinesh Swaroop Brahmachari, now known as Chai-Wale Baba, has spent over 40 years offering free coaching to civil service aspirants. What sets him apart is his vow of silence and his diet of only tea—ten cups a day to be precise.

Despite his silence, Chai-Wale Baba continues to guide his students through written messages and gestures. His unique methods have earned him admiration, with students like Rajesh Singh crediting him for their success. “We can write to him anytime, and he responds promptly through gestures or written messages,” Singh shared.

Baba Mokshapuri: A Former US Soldier

Michael, a former soldier in the US Army, found his calling in spirituality after a family trip to India. Now known as Baba Mokshapuri, he discovered solace in meditation and Sanatan Dharma, especially after the tragic loss of his son.

Associated with the Juna Akhara, Baba Mokshapuri dedicates his life to spreading the teachings of Sanatan Dharma. “I realized nothing is permanent, and this awakening led me to seek moksha,” he shared, reflecting on his spiritual journey.

Ambassador Baba and Splendor Baba

Adding a modern twist to tradition, some Babas at the Maha Kumbh have made their arrivals in style. Ambassador Baba, a sage from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, arrived in his iconic saffron-colored 1972 Ambassador car, which has been his spiritual companion for over three decades.

Meanwhile, Splendor Baba, hailing from Gujarat, undertook a remarkable 14-day journey to the Mela on a three-wheeler motorcycle, covering an astounding one lakh kilometers.

IITian Baba

Abhay Singh, also known as IITian Baba, is an IIT Bombay graduate in aerospace engineering who left behind a promising career to embrace spirituality. “Even while studying engineering, I explored philosophy to understand the meaning of life,” he explained. Today, he believes spirituality holds the key to mental well-being, making him a symbol of intellect merging with spiritual wisdom.

Rabri Baba

At the break of dawn each day, Mahant Devgiri of Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani prepares a giant pot of milk to make Rabri, a creamy dessert that he serves to devotees. For Mahant Devgiri, this is more than service—it is a soulful connection with the divine. “This is not for publicity but for my soul to connect with the Supreme Being,” he said.

Environment Baba

Known as Environment Baba, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Aruna Giri is a crusader for environmental conservation. Since 2016, he has encouraged his followers to plant trees as part of spiritual rituals, aiming to balance nature with devotion. “I have planted trees across 27 states, and my devotees in 30 countries have pledged to plant over 1 crore trees,” he shared.

A Spiritual Tapestry of Faith and Individuality

The Maha Kumbh Mela is not just a religious event; it is a melting pot of traditions, modern influences, and extraordinary individuals. Babas with unconventional lifestyles and progressive approaches have added a new dimension to the gathering, inspiring millions who throng to Prayagraj to witness this grand confluence of faith and humanity.

Whether it’s the silent wisdom of Chai-Wale Baba, the eco-conscious efforts of Environment Baba, or the spiritual awakening of an IITian, these tales remind us of the diverse paths to spirituality. The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 stands as a testament to the timeless and evolving nature of India’s spiritual heritage, drawing devotees not just to its holy waters but also to its extraordinary stories.
