World’s First Vedic Clock- A Fusion of Culture and Innovation in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Virtually Inaugurates the Vikramaditya Vedic Clock

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is poised to make history with the grand unveiling of the world’s first Vedic Clock, a groundbreaking innovation in timekeeping. Nestled on an 85-foot tower within the city’s iconic Jantar Mantar, this meticulously crafted timepiece got officially inaugurated today, in a virtual ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Beyond Timekeeping: A Confluence of Culture and Science

Positioned adjacent to the Government Jiwaji Observatory, the Vedic Clock goes beyond the conventional role of merely displaying time. It is a cultural and scientific marvel designed to offer a comprehensive insight into the Vedic Hindu Panchang, encompassing planetary positions, auspicious timings (Muhurats), astrological calculations and predictions, and the lunar day (Tithi). This unique approach provides a fascinating window into ancient Indian timekeeping methods, interwoven with various cultural and astrological aspects. Additionally, the clock will display both Indian Standard Time (IST) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for global reference.

Unique Features and Historical Significance

Shishir Gupta, a key member of the development team, sheds light on the distinctive features, stating, “The clock will divide the time between sunrises into 30 parts, with each hour consisting of 48 minutes according to IST. The reading will start from 0:00 with sunrise, marking the beginning of each 30-hour cycle.”

Ujjain, historically significant as a center for timekeeping, is an apt location for this remarkable invention. The city’s association with precise timekeeping dates back centuries, with the Tropic of Cancer passing through its geographical location. Notably, Ujjain housed a time calculation machine 300 years ago, cementing its historical role in this field.

Indian Heritage and Innovation in Harmony

The initiative for the Vedic Clock commenced on November 6th, 2022, with the foundation stone laid by the then Higher Education Minister, Mohan Yadav, who is now the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. This visionary project not only showcases India’s rich cultural heritage but also signifies the nation’s commitment to continuous scientific advancements.

The inauguration of the Vedic Clock on March 1st i.e. today, serves as a poignant reminder of India’s unique contributions to the world. It is a testament to the country’s efforts to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, bringing ancient timekeeping methods into the modern era. The Vedic Clock stands as a symbol of India’s rich cultural tapestry woven seamlessly with cutting-edge technology, inviting the world to witness the convergence of time, tradition, and progress.
