The Dujiangyan Zhongshuge Bookstore in Chengdu, China, is a stunning architectural and cultural marvel. Designed by the renowned Li Xiang and her firm X+Living, the bookstore spans nearly 1,000 square meters and offers a deeply immersive experience that blends literature, art, and natural inspiration. Completed in 2020, the store is located in the historic city of Dujiangyan, famous for its ancient irrigation system, which serves as a central theme in the store’s design.
Upon entering, visitors are greeted by breathtaking C-shaped bookshelves made of natural walnut wood, which create a sense of flow and harmony with the surrounding environment. The shelving units mimic the rolling mountains and rivers of the local landscape, with the bookstore’s spatial layout evoking a journey through both literature and nature. The ceiling features mirrored elements, amplifying the sense of grandeur and making the already lofty space seem infinite. This design decision not only adds depth but also pays homage to the Dujiangyan Dam, a monumental work of ancient engineering.
Each area of the bookstore is carefully curated to enhance the visitor’s experience. For instance, the children’s section is a whimsical forest of green bamboo bookshelves, complete with playful panda illustrations—an ode to Sichuan’s most famous native species. Vibrant cushions on the floor invite children to sit, read, and dream, creating an inviting and magical atmosphere.
The central literature district is where the store’s architectural brilliance truly shines. A spiral staircase at its heart allows visitors to browse books easily, while the top shelves, out of reach, serve a decorative purpose, enhancing the visual impact of endless books. The space is designed to resemble a city wall, reflecting the historical and cultural heritage of Dujiangyan.
Beyond books, the store houses a café and numerous reading nooks, making it a place where people can linger, explore, and connect. Whether you’re there for a brief visit or a long afternoon, the bookstore offers a unique fusion of cultural reverence, modern design, and literary indulgence, transforming it into more than just a bookstore—it’s a sanctuary for the mind and spirit.
