Chaitra Navratri 2022: Know dates, significance, history and celebration..

The Chaitra Navratri, a nine day festival, will begin on April 2 and shall continue till April 11.

The Chaitra Navratri holds immense religious significance in Hinduism. It falls in the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu calendar which corresponds to March-April as per the Gregorian calendar.

Navratri, spanning over 9 days in which nine goddesses are worshipped, is a Hindu festival which is celebrated with zeal and fesrvour.

Chaitra Navratri: Know Goddesses worshipped on nine days

The nine dieties worshipped include Shailaputri or Pratipada, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidhatri. There are four seasonal navratris observed in India, out of which two: Chaitra and Sharad navratris are celebrated the most. The other two navratris are observed in Magha and Asadha month.

Chaitra Navratri: Eating satvik food

During the Navratri, people abstain from alcohol and non-veg food items and eat sattvik food. People also abstain from the consumption of onion and garlic during this period.

Temples and religious places are decorated for devotees to come and offer their prayers to the goddesses. Each day of the navratri holds a different significance.

Many people also perform rituals and pujas as per Hindu astrology.

Chaitra Navratri 2022 date

The Chaitra Navratri will be observed from April 2, 2022 to April 11, 2022. The Ashtami of the Chaitra Navratri, which is considered to be the most important day of ritual, falls on the 8th day of the navratri which is on April 9.

The complete detail of the puja on 9 days of Chaitra Navratri is given below:

  • April 2: Maa Shailputri Puja
  • April 3: Maa Brahmacharini Puja
  • April 4: Maa Chandraghanta Puja
  • April 5: Maa Kushmanda Puja
  • April 6: Maa Skandmata Puja
  • April 7: Maa Katyayani Puja
  • April 8: Maa Kalratri Puja
  • April 9: Maa Mahagauri Puja
  • April 10: Maa Siddhidatri Puja

During the ashtami or the eighth day of Chaitra Navratri, sandhi puja is done. As per Hindu panchang, this year the sandhi puja can be done between 12:59 AM on April 10, 2022 and 01:47 AM on April 10,2022.

Chaitra Navratri 2022 time

The Pratipada tithi marks the beginning of Chaitra Navratri every year. For Chaitra Navratri 2022, the pratipada tithi begins at 11.53 am on April 1. This will be effective till 11.58 am on April 2.

The Kalash sthapana timing, which is the most auspicious time of every navratri, will be from 6.22 am on April 2 to 8.31 am on April 2. Those who do navratri puja and keep fast can do the Kalash sthapana or the ghatasthapana during this duration which will be ideally for 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Chaitra Navratri 2022 history

The Chaitra Navratri ends with Ram Navami which is the birthday of Hindu god Vishnu’s seventh avatar, Ram. Lord Ram was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya.

Chaitra is the first month of the year as per Hindu calendar. This is also the month of spring. The first day of Chaitra is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu.
