Dr Rajendra Joshi: The harbinger of change who brought Swiss Dual System to India to build a ‘Skilled Nation’

0

This is a story of a man born in Rajasthan’s small town Jhunjhunu who has big dreams shining bright in his eyes right from his childhood. He went to Switzerland to pursue his PhD after getting a pharmacy degree from BITS Pilani. After exploring the European countries developed model which remained unaffected even after world War II, he brought in a ‘Swiss-Dual-System’ in India to become a harbinger of change in education sector of India, while setting his eyes on creating a skilled nation.

This man with vision and mission is no other than Dr Rajendra Joshi who is also being termed as the father of modern skill development for he set-up a state-of-the-art university in Jaipur to showcase the benefits of the dual system of education. He is also credited with developing several therapeutic drugs, including the well-known Fumaderm and Tecfidera (BG 12). After spending most of his life in Switzerland, this research scientist, shifted his attention to developing India’s vast talent pool through various skill development initiatives.

He was visionary researcher and a social entrepreneur, who along with his wife Ursula Joshi, set up a new trend in the field of Modern Skill Development and established the Rajendra and Ursula Joshi (RUJ) Group in 2013 in Rajasthan, India.

Swiss Dual System of Skill Development

Aiming to skill and empower the youth with the best of the Swiss Dual System of Skill Development, this Group is scripting a success story by creating and offering employment by skilling young talent into professionals making every individual self-sustainable.

There are many credits to Dr. Rajendra Joshi’s portfolio which include

Inventing Tecfidera (BG 12), a medicine against multiple sclerosis (MS): Tecfidera is sold globally by Biogen Idec and is considered to be a blockbuster product.

Dr. Rajendra Joshi laid the foundation of RS India-RUJ & SRM Mechanics Pvt. Ltd., for manufacturing of precision parts, surgical instruments, cutlery, etc., in collaboration with Swiss company SRM Technologies AG.

The group is also promoting RUFIL – RUJ Food Industries Limited, which is dealing in vast portfolio of dairy products.

Dr. Joshi was recently awarded with the Pravasi Bharatiya Award by the President of India for his exemplary work in the field of science and technology

He was a philanthropist who donated with open hearts

Dr. Joshi, in addition to contribution in development of skilled workforce in India, took keen interest in philanthropic activities especially in the field of education.  He contributed Rs. 6 crore to the Nalanda University for funding a Chair in the School of Historical Studies which was widely covered by the national media.  Dr. Joshi also established Rajendra and Ursula Joshi Education Society (JES) with an FCRA certificate, with the aim of helping needy students in their education and for helping other people for medical purposes.

He & his wife studied how Swiss Dual System helped economies to sail smooth during WWII and brought this system to India

Dr. Joshi married Mrs. Ursula Joshi in 1989 a pharmacist from ETH, Zurich who was running her own pharmacy. Throughout their lives, they both always wondered and searched for reasons as to how the Swiss, German and Austrian economies were so sound that even a huge crisis like World War II could not unsettle them.  The reason they realised was that the skilled workforce of all these countries was over 92% including academicians, which is totally different than other European countries and rest of the world. The system of apprenticeship education prevailing in these three countries was totally different from the rest of the world and is called the “Swiss Dual System”.  The “Dual” here means learning in theory in vocational school and practical training on job in industry.

Jarawas in Andaman Islands reveal the most primitive stage of tribals’ life on Earth

0

If you have ever visited Andaman Islands, you must have heard the stories of Jarawas, the tribals who have been residing here since centuries. For those who haven’t visited here, we bring the story of the Jarawas, the tribals who continue living their life in their most primitive stage. They continue hunting and fishing to satiate their hunger; at times, they are seen naked while some times, they are seen wearing some clothes which they have started recently a few years back, due to their counselling by NGOs.

The largest tribe

The Jarawa tribe, in fact, is one amongst the largest tribes in Andaman Islands with a population ranging between 250 and 400. They have shunned all interaction with outsiders since centuries. In fact, their name goes with their nature  and means “The hostile ones”. The Jarawas have been residing in a thick forest reserve spreading around 1,028km between the south and middle Andamans.

Tribal tourism

Many tourists, interesting to see them, take a two-hour bus ride from Andaman’s capital Port Blair to Baratang, which houses many limestone caves as well as mud volcanoes.  The tourists have to travel via the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) which cuts through the Jarawa reserves. During their trip, the officials warn the tourists to shut the car windows and not to take their hand ever. Even their cameras are been kept with driver so that no tourist can ever take a picture of any tribal. The reason is that tribals get annoyed and might attack the tourists.

Tracing the tribals on way

While taking the ATR track, they might see these tribals taking a hunted animal on their shoulder or else carrying bows and arrows on their shoulders. The Jarawa comprise the primitive stage of life on earth and depend upon forest and sea for food.

The regular food comprise wild boar and monitor lizard. Also, fruits , honey and tubers comprise their diet. A few years back, the jarawas of both sexes were seen naked, however, now, a few of them have started wearing clothes after coming in touch with NGOs working there. They are also seen wearing shells and palm leaves.

When they fought Britishers

This tribe was earlier living in the southeast part of Andaman however after the British regime, they shifted to the western region of the island.  This tribe, along with other Andamanese tribes resisted Britishers when they tried to enter the island for first time in around 1788-89. With their total population counting to 5000-8000, they were able to resist them, resulting in the British to shift to Port Conwallis. Also their plans to obtain Port Blair and Ross island had to be withdrawn for next 60 years. However Britishers tried again to capture Port Blair in 1858 and was successful but the Andamanese tribe in 1859 attacked on them again. This battle fought between the great Andamanese and the British regime is called as ‘The Aberdeen war’.

The tribe made a well-planned attack on Britishers however were betrayed by one Dudhanth Tiwari who for some time had lived with the tribals.

The great Andamanese suffered due to this betrayal. As they fought  with bows and arrows against Brtishers’ guns and artillery, quite a big number of their young male population was killed in the battle.  Their population dwindled and by 1901 only 625 great Andamanese were left. Seems they learned the lesson and hence still dont trust humans and maintain a decent distance with human class.

Handloom, Craft, art and artisans in India…

0

As the country celebrated the National Handloom Day on Friday, there were many discussions held across different parts of Rajasthan discussing as to why the handloom sector, despite being a great tradition of the country, was on decline. Let’s see what the leading names of the industry have to say about the challenge and opportunities existing in this sector…

Artisans should strengthen their foundation

Rta Kapur Chisti, a renowned author and textile scholar, in one of the talk shows, said, that all artisans engaged in the handloom industry must first strengthen their foundation. Only then can they create top class work which will be coveted by the entire world. Benchmarks must be created to recognise what kind of handiwork qualifies as top class work so that artisan may be encourage and supported to produce such quality. Handloom is a great tradition of the country which is witnessing decline. This is mainly because artisans are not being given enough respect and recognition for their trade. The earnings in the industry are also very low which is why this generational craft is dying. If artisans get good earnings, their children will also follow in their footsteps and keep the art alive,” she said.

AnanTaya co-founder Geetanjali Kasliwal, speaking in a webinar on Sustainable Luxury tomorrow, said, “Recontextualising the meaning and relevance of Luxury in this new paradigm linking it to Sustainability is the biggest need of the hour.”

Minister of Art & Culture, Government of Rajasthan, Dr. B.D Kalla, said, “During the Indian Independence Movement, Mahatma Gandhi had said that agriculture is a deficit deal, a farmer can never move ahead by just farming. Which is why Gandhi started ‘Khadi Gram Udyog’ (khadi industries), ‘Kutir Udyog’ (cottage industries) and ‘Hathkargha Udyog’ (handloom industries).

The handloom industry employs many people and is significant for the economy. In Rajasthan, Sanganeri, Bagru and Ajrak prints have been predominantly strong. Many artisans from the State have received awards and been recognised for their exceptional work.”

Narayan Seva Sansthan (NSS): A smart village with all facilities available for physically challenged

0

Located in Udaipur in Rajasthan, Narayan Seva Sansthan (NSS) is a smart village with all facilities available for physically challenged

It has a 1100 bedded hospital, which cures the differently able individuals and provides them social & economical rehabilitation.

From corrective surgeries to post surgery treatment, during recovery support and recreational activities, all are free of cost for patient.

Can you believe that an organisation which started with an ounce of flour over three decades back is now a  renowned centre executing more than 100 corrective surgeries of Polio and Cerebral Palsy patients every day and makes thousands of physically challenged stand on their own?

This might sound surprising but is a fact and if you wanna check it on your own, then you should visit the Narayan Seva Sansthan situated in Udaipur which was founded by Kailash Agarwal in 1985. The centre now stands with pride handholding the physically affected individuals to ensure they make a healthy living, while fighting all odds.

Narayan Seva Sansthan (NSS): A smart village with all facilities available for physically challenged

Founded by Padmashri Shri Kailash Agarwal ‘Manav’ with a motto to serve the humanity in the year 1985, Narayan Seva Sansthan today is scripting many inspiring stories by training physically challenged people to stand on their own.

In fact, the story of Agarwal’s inspiration to start this centre goes back to the year 1976 when he was informed of an accident  in Pindwara, Sirohi District of Rajasthan which left 43 people dead.

He immediately took a leave from his job, rushed to the accident spot and was deeply moved feeing and feeling the pain and plight of the 43 casualties in a road accident there.

With the help of others, Shri Kailash ‘Manav’ admitted the injured to the general hospital and started visiting  hospital daily  to look after the patients to provide them with the best possible help.

One day, on his routine visit to the hospital, he met a patient named ‘Kisna Bheel’ who he saw keeping some portion of food from the plate served to him for his brother and son. On asking, Kisna Bheel replied that ‘I am still hungry, but my brother and son are also accompanying me. We have no money left with us and I have to save the chapattis for them!’

Right at this moment, Shri Kailash ‘Manav’ thought there must be many such people who would be sleeping hungry for their families.

To help those people, he distributed some containers with ‘Narayan Seva’ written on it to his relatives and acquaintances and asked them to put some flour in it on daily basis. He along with his wife prepared chapattis out of the flour which they collected and fed the hungry.

Prashant Agarwal who was a young dynamic boy then, helped parents with basic help to sustain their humanitarian efforts and thus acquired the hobby of Social Service. From there, the journey of Narayan Seva Sansthan started in the year 1985 which is now helping thousands of youths stand on their hand fighting the odds of being physically challenged.

Few years later, a severe famine broke in Udaipur. To help the affected population, Agarwal organised camps in the rural and tribal regions and distributed free clothes, food grains and medicines which he collected from the generous people of Udaipur.

Continuing his humanitarian deeds, he laid the foundation of an orphanage “Bhagwan Mahavir Nirashrit Balgrah” on December 15, 1990 to provide the homeless children belonging to the tribal and rural parts of Udaipur with quality education so that they can be part of the mainstream society.

One day when he was distributing free food to the poor and needy in his camps, he saw a person crawling on his four legs who came to him for his help. He took him to Mumbai for treatment and then he decided that he will help the ‘differently able’ persons. Thereafter, more polio patients were taken by him to Mumbai for treatment but it was very costly affair and time consuming process to take each and every patient to Mumbai. So, he decided to establish a hospital in Udaipur.

On February 20, 1997, the foundation of a 151 bedded Chainraj Lodha Hospital was laid in Udaipur, with the financial support from Chainraj Lodha to conduct free operations of people suffering from polio or birth disabilities. This is how Shri Kaliash Ji ‘Manav’ came into the field of serving the ‘differently able’ persons and today ‘Narayan Seva Sansthan’ is India’s top most NGO serving in the field of treating and providing rehabilitation the ‘differently able’ patients across the Globe.

It has been organising mass marriage ceremonies of physically challenged people and is also taking them on stage to showcase their talents of dance and perform cat walk too following an utmost principle of ‘Service of oppressed humanity is service of the almighty.’
