The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has enforced a ban on the night market situated at Jal Mahal. This decision comes after a comprehensive report was presented, highlighting the eco-sensitive nature of Jal Mahal and its potential impact on the surrounding environment.

Initiated in November last year by the Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporation to boost night tourism, the night market aimed to offer a unique shopping experience twice a week from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The market featured over 100 temporary stalls within tented domes on the sail of Jalmahal, offering a fusion of traditional and modern Rajasthan, along with diverse culinary delights.

However, the NGT’s ban stems from concerns about the market’s proximity to the Nahargarh Wildlife Sanctuary and its location within an eco-sensitive zone. The market’s operations were found to be polluting the Jalmahal Lake, while generating noise pollution that negatively impacted local wildlife.

The court formed a committee, including the Jaipur Collector, the Principal Conservator of Forests, and a Rajasthan Pollution Control Board representative, to assess the situation. Their report confirmed the market’s presence within the eco-sensitive zone and its detrimental effects on the environment and lake.

As a result, the NGT has imposed a ban on the night market, and further ordered a comprehensive assessment of pollution levels in Jalmahal Lake and groundwater conditions in the area. The decision underscores the importance of environmental preservation while considering developmental initiatives.

The exhibition, hosted at the Chandra Mahal within Sawai Man Singh Mahal’s Rambagh Palace Hotel, is part of a series aligned with the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting. “Navaratan” showcases Jaipur’s expertise in gems, jewellery, textiles, and handicrafts, offering a visual feast to esteemed G20 delegates. The theme revolves around the concept of “NAVARATAN,” symbolizing the significance of nine precious stones, their influence on Rajasthan’s jewellery, crafts, and textiles, contributing to the region’s diverse heritage.

Ministers Goyal and Becht engaged with artisans, exploring the intricate processes of crafting gems, jewellery, and indigenous textiles like Dabu, Block Print, Bandhani, Gotta Patti, and more. The exhibition, organized by The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), highlighted Rajasthan as a global jewellery hub, immersing delegates in the art of jewellery making, from mine to market.

Live craft demonstrations of Thikri Craft, Block Printing, Lac Bangles, Blue Pottery, and Sanjhi Art further enriched the experience, offering delegates firsthand insights into Rajasthan’s rich craft traditions. The event also spotlighted the region’s cultural opulence with meticulously carved boxes, ornate sandooks, exquisite jewellery, and adorned figurines.

S Mohana Kumar is a senior scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the mission director of Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar exploration mission. Kailasavadivoo Sivan, popularly known as K. Sivan, is an Indian space scientist who has made remarkable contributions to the country’s space program. He served as the Secretary of the Department of Space and chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Space Commission from January 2018 to January 2023. He has also been the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.

Sivan was born on 14 April 1957 in Mela Sarakkalvilai, a small village in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. He was the eldest of six children of Kailasavadivoonadar, a paddy and mango farmer, and Chellam, a homemaker. His family was very poor and he had to help his father in the fields and sell mangoes in the market. Despite the hardships, he was very brilliant at studies and had a keen interest in science and mathematics. He completed his schooling from a Tamil medium government school in his village and then pursued his B.Sc. degree in mathematics from South Travancore Hindu College, Nagercoil.

Sivan wanted to become an engineer but could not afford the fees for engineering college. He got a scholarship to study aerospace engineering at Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai, where he graduated with a gold medal in 1980. He then joined ISRO as a scientist/engineer at Thiruvananthapuram and worked on the development of launch vehicles. He obtained his M.E. degree in aerospace engineering from IISc Bangalore in 1982 and his Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay in 2006.

Sivan has been instrumental in designing and developing various rockets and satellites for ISRO. He is known as the “Rocket Man” of India for his expertise in rocket propulsion and launch vehicle technology. He has played a key role in many successful missions such as PSLV, GSLV, Chandrayaan-1, Chandrayaan-2, Mangalyaan, Gaganyaan, and Aditya-L1. He has also led the development of India’s first reusable launch vehicle (RLV) and scramjet engine.

Sivan has received many awards and honors for his achievements in the field of space science. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri (2014), Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1999), ISRO Merit Award (2007), Dr Biren Roy Space Science Award (2011), Distinguished Alumnus Award from MIT Chennai (2013) and IISc Bangalore (2018), among others. He is also a Fellow of various prestigious institutions such as Indian National Academy of Engineering, Aeronautical Society of India, Systems Society of India, etc.
