Pollution Episodes in Delhi-NCR: Galgotias University Partners in Groundbreaking Study to Develop Scientific Insights

0

Galgotias University has joined hands with the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and other prestigious organizations to undertake a crucial study aimed at understanding pollution episodes in the Delhi-NCR region. The research, titled “Development of Scientific Insights about Pollution Episodes in Delhi-NCR based on Tethered Balloon and Drone Platform, is set to take place from September to October 2024. This joint effort will utilize cutting-edge technologies such as tethered balloons and drones to study particulate matter and meteorological parameters at varying altitudes.

Objective of the Study

The primary goal of this study is to provide in-situ observations of the physicochemical characteristics of particulate matter at different altitudes, alongside meteorological data. These observations will be carried out during both low and high pollution conditions, with the aim of accessing the variation in particle characteristics and concentrations under different meteorological scenarios. The findings will play a key role in understanding pollution formation processes, especially the haze episodes that commonly affect the region within the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL).

Collaborating Institutions and Timeline

Led by CSIR-NPL, the study involves several prominent organizations, including the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Balloon Facility, NESAC (North Eastern Space Applications Centre), and CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL). Experiments will be conducted at three key locations across the Delhi-NCR region:

  • Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana
  • Galgotias University, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh
  • CSIR National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi

The study will take place from 25-30 September 2024, focusing on low pollution conditions, and from 18-28 October 2024 during haze formation. Using a tethered balloon and drones, instruments like particulate matter samplers and microbial culture plates will gather data at various altitudes to assess pollution and meteorological changes.

The experiment will use a tethered balloon (Kytoon, approximately 10 m³) and a drone to collect data at altitudes between 400-800 meters, depending on feasibility. The payload will include advanced instruments like a low-volume particulate matter sampler, volatile organic compounds sampler, microbial culture plates, and a radiosonde to gather comprehensive atmospheric data.

These tools will help collect data on particulate matter and volatile compounds while also observing microbial activity at various atmospheric layers. The findings will be pivotal in shaping strategies for reducing haze episodes and understanding the potential health risks associated with air pollution in the region.

Impact and Long-Term Benefits

The data generated from this study will provide valuable insights into pollution control strategies and remedial measures for haze episodes. Furthermore, the research will reduce uncertainties surrounding regional climate change assessments, aiding policymakers and health professionals in crafting better response plans for the growing air pollution crisis in Delhi-NCR.

Dr. Dhruv Galgotia, CEO of Galgotias University, expressed pride in the university’s involvement in this pivotal research project, addressing a critical issue for Delhi-NCR. He emphasized that Galgotias University’s commitment to academic excellence and social responsibility drives its participation in this study, aimed at uncovering sustainable solutions for environmental and public health challenges. Dr. Galgotia is confident that the insights gained will not only help mitigate the harmful effects of pollution but also contribute to creating a healthier, more sustainable future for the region.

ETF vs. Mutual Funds: Key Differences Every Investor Should Know

0

When it comes to investing, two popular options are Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and Mutual Funds. Both can help you grow your money, but they work in different ways. Understanding these differences is important for making smart investment choices. Here, we’ll break down what ETFs and mutual funds are, how they differ, and what you need to consider as an investor.

Mutual funds pool money from many investors to buy a variety of stocks, bonds, or other securities. A professional manager oversees the fund and makes decisions about where to invest. Mutual funds are bought and sold at the end of the trading day at a price known as the Net Asset Value (NAV). This price reflects the total value of all the fund’s assets divided by the number of shares outstanding.

What are ETFs?
Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) also pool money from multiple investors, but they are traded on stock exchanges like individual stocks. This means you can buy and sell ETFs throughout the trading day at market prices, which may differ from their NAV.

ETF funds can track specific indexes, such as the Nifty 50, or focus on specific sectors, commodities, or regions. This flexibility makes them a popular choice among investors looking to diversify their portfolios.

Key differences between ETFs and mutual funds

  • Trading and liquidity: ETFs provide real-time trading options on stock exchanges, making them very liquid. ETFs can be bought and sold throughout the trading day at current market prices. Additionally, ETFs have an indicative NAV (iNAV) that is updated frequently during the day. In contrast, mutual funds are valued at the end of the day based on their NAV, which might differ from intra-day prices.
  • Cost structure: ETFs generally have lower expense ratios because they are passively managed. On the other hand, actively managed mutual funds tend to have higher fees due to costs associated with research, analysis, distribution and management.
  • Investment approach: ETFs track a specific index, which offers transparency and reduced risk. In contrast, actively managed mutual funds rely on the decisions made by fund managers, which can potentially yield higher returns but also carry greater risk.
  • Investing process: To invest in an ETF, you need a DEMAT account. In comparison, mutual funds can be purchased through a mutual fund house, a distributor, or an aggregator.

Despite their different operational methods, ETFs and mutual funds share the common goal of providing investors with professionally managed, diversified investment options:

  • Diversified structure: Both ETFs and mutual funds give investors access to a diverse portfolio of assets, helping to spread risk across various holdings.
  • Professional management: Whether through the passive tracking of an index in ETFs or the active strategies of mutual fund managers, both investment vehicles benefit from the expertise of financial professionals.
  • Variety: There is a wide range of ETFs and mutual funds available, catering to various investor preferences.

Considerations for investors: Choosing between ETFs and mutual funds
Both ETFs and mutual funds come with their own unique benefits. ETFs might attract investors looking for low-cost, passive exposure to specific market segments, along with the ability to trade throughout the day. On the other hand, mutual funds may be suited for those who appreciate active management and aim to outperform benchmark indices over the long term.

ETFs: Flexibility and trading
ETFs provide investors with flexibility and the opportunity for real-time trading. If you value the ability to buy and sell during market hours to take advantage of price fluctuations, ETFs could be a great option. Additionally, their passive management style typically results in lower expense ratios, making them cost-effective for long-term investors.

Mutual Funds: Professional expertise and active management
Mutual funds, particularly actively managed ones, appeal to those who prefer to rely on professional fund managers to handle their investments. These experts use their market knowledge and insights to make informed buy and sell decisions on behalf of investors.

Your choice will ultimately depend on your financial goals, risk tolerance, investment horizon, and liquidity needs.

Risk tolerance: Actively managed mutual funds may carry higher risks in the pursuit of generating alpha (outperforming the benchmark index). Conversely, ETFs, with their passive strategy, might be more appropriate for those looking to align their investments with overall market trends.

Investment style: If you prefer real-time trading options, an ETF might be the better fit for you.

Conclusion
Both ETFs and mutual funds can be valuable tools for building your investment portfolio. Understanding their differences can help you make informed choices that align with your financial goals. Whether you choose ETFs, mutual funds, or a combination of both, the key is to stay informed and make decisions that suit your individual needs.

World Tourism Day: India rises from 10th to 8th position as World’ most powerful travel and tourism market

0

The World Travel & Tourism Council recently launched its 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report, which  revealed the U.S. as the world’s most powerful Travel & Tourism market, contributing a record-breaking $2.36 TN to the nation’s economy last year.

India came in eighth, rising from a previous 10th position, with US$231.6 BN, marking a notable improvement and highlighting its growing influence in the sector. Italy and Spain complete the top 10, contributing US$231.3 BN and US$227.9 BN, respectively.

However, over the next decade, WTTC predicts China will become the biggest Travel & Tourism market with India moving up to 4th position.

Despite the slow return of spending from international travellers, the U.S. keeps pole position, with almost double the economic contribution of its nearest rival.

Following a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism, the sector continues to be the backbone to many country economies, while supporting millions of jobs globally.

The latest report from the global tourism body reveals China as the world’s second most powerful market with a GDP contribution of US$1.3 TN in 2023, underscoring its impressive rebound, despite the late reopening of its borders.

Germany secured the third spot with a US$487.6 BN economic contribution, while Japan, which in 2022 was in 5th place, jumped up to 4th position, contributing US$297 BN.

The United Kingdom completes the top five, contributing US$295.2 BN.

France, the world’s most popular destination, retained its sixth position with a contribution of US$264.7 BN, followed closely by Mexico at US$261.6 BN, showcasing its continued appeal as a major tourist destination.
These shifts illustrate the dynamic nature of the global Travel & Tourism sector, with emerging markets gaining ground and traditional powerhouses maintaining their strongholds.

The report also highlights the countries experiencing the highest annual growth rates in their Travel & Tourism contributions to GDP.

In 2023, China’s sector surged ahead with an astounding year on year growth of 135.8%, while other Asian countries, such as Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, and the Philippines recovered soon after the removal of travel restrictions.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “As we look forward to a record-breaking 2024, it’s clear that Travel & Tourism is not only back on track, but also set to achieve unprecedented growth.

“We will continue to prioritise sustainability and inclusivity, ensuring that this growth benefits everyone and protects our planet for future generations. The sector’s resilience and potential for innovation continues to drive us forward.”

According to the report, many key destinations will profit from a surge in international spending this year compared to pre-pandemic levels, with Saudi Arabia up 91.3% compared to 2019. Türkiye (+38.2%), Kenya (+33.3%), Colombia (+29.1%) and Egypt (+22.9%) leading the way.

Globally, international visitor spending is set to grow by nearly 16% to reach US$1.9 TN, while domestic tourists are projected to spend more than ever before, reaching US$5.4TN, an increase of 10.3% over 2019 levels.

Travel & Tourism investment grew 13% in 2023 to reach more than US$1TN, with a return to pre-pandemic levels anticipated by 2025.

However, high interest rates around the world could create challenges for future investment. It is therefore crucial that the public and private sectors work together to innovate to ensure the continual strengthening of this vital sector.

The report also highlights the sector’s commitment to sustainability, showcasing the decoupling of growth from greenhouse gas emissions and the increasing opportunities for women, young people, and marginalised communities.

Technological advancements, particularly in AI, are expected to further enhance the travel experience and drive future growth.

Cyber Attack: Ranveer Allahbadia’s YouTube Channels Hacked and Deleted

0

In a shocking cyber attack on Wednesday night, popular content creator Ranveer Allahbadia, widely known for his YouTube channels like “BeerBiceps,” became the victim of a major hacking incident. Both of his main YouTube channels, which boast millions of followers, were compromised, and all interviews, podcasts, and videos were deleted. In addition to wiping out his content, the hackers also renamed the channels, causing further disruption to his online presence.

Ranveer Allahbadia, who started his content creation journey at the age of 22 with BeerBiceps, now operates around seven YouTube channels, with a collective following of approximately 12 million subscribers. Despite this success, the hacking incident has left a massive void in his online portfolio.

Hackers Used AI-Generated Elon Musk Avatar in Crypto Scam

The hackers reportedly exploited an AI-generated avatar of Tesla CEO Elon Musk in a deceptive livestream to promote a cryptocurrency scam. The fraudulent stream urged viewers to invest in Bitcoin or Ethereum with a false promise of doubling their returns. Using a common tactic seen in cyberattacks targeting high-profile YouTube channels, the hackers directed viewers to scan a QR code and deposit cryptocurrency on a suspicious website named elonweb.net. This classic “Bitcoin doubling” scam has been a recurring method of deception in the digital space.

YouTube Takes Action: Channels Removed for Policy Violations

In response to the attack, YouTube took immediate action and removed Allahbadia’s channels due to policy violations. Initially, users who searched for the channels were greeted with a message indicating that they had been taken down for violating YouTube’s terms. Now, anyone trying to access the channels is met with the message, “This page isn’t available. Sorry about that. Try searching for something else.”

Allahbadia’s Response to the Incident

Despite the unfortunate incident, Ranveer Allahbadia maintained a positive attitude. Hours after the hacking, he posted a light-hearted Story on his Instagram handle @beerbiceps, sharing a picture of his meal with the caption, “Celebrating my two main channels being hacked with my favorite food. Vegan burgers.” In another Story, he humorously questioned, “Is this the end of my YouTube career? Was nice knowing you all.”

His last post on X (formerly Twitter), shared 14 hours prior to the hack, featured a short clip from his podcast on communal harmony. Although the situation is distressing, Allahbadia seems to be handling it with a blend of humor and resilience.

Lessons from the Incident: Strengthening Cybersecurity in the Digital Age

Ranveer Allahbadia’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the increasing cyber threats faced by influencers, content creators, and businesses on social media platforms. With an estimated cyberattack happening every 44 seconds globally, securing online assets is more crucial than ever.

Common Social Media Threats

Social media accounts are prime targets for cybercriminals due to the vast amounts of personal and business-sensitive information shared on these platforms. The most common threats include phishing attacks, impersonation, malware, ransomware, and password theft. Phishing scams, for example, use fake ads, messages, or emails to trick individuals into revealing sensitive data like passwords and banking information.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Business

To protect yourself from similar cyberattacks, it’s essential to follow key cybersecurity practices:

  1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Ensure passwords are long, complex, and unique for each account. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdates or common words.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): This adds an extra layer of security, requiring a second form of verification before accessing accounts.
  3. Review Privacy Settings: Regularly check and update your privacy settings on social media platforms to limit access to personal information.
  4. Limit Sharing of Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive details like your location, phone number, or email address publicly on social media.
  5. Be Cautious with Friend Requests: Verify any friend requests or direct messages, especially from unfamiliar users. Cybercriminals often impersonate known individuals or brands to gain trust.
  6. Recognize Scams and Fraudulent Links: Be wary of emails or messages containing suspicious links. Always verify the source before clicking.
  7. Avoid Public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to secure your connection when accessing social media in public places.
  8. Keep Software Updated: Regularly update your software and apps to protect against security vulnerabilities.

Protecting Your Business

For businesses, it’s equally important to implement robust security measures. This includes creating a comprehensive social media policy, restricting access to sensitive accounts, and training staff on cybersecurity awareness. Two-factor authentication should also be required for business accounts to prevent unauthorized access.

Stay Safe in a Digital World

As Ranveer Allahbadia’s case highlights, no one is immune to cyber threats. By adopting these cybersecurity practices, individuals and businesses can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to hackers. In today’s digital landscape, being proactive about online security is the best defense against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

0

In a moment of pride for India and especially for Rajasthan, Sujan Jawai in Pali has been recognized as one of the world’s top 50 unique hotels, securing the 43rd position. This is a remarkable achievement as Sujan Jawai is the only hotel from India to make it to this prestigious list. The announcement was made at a grand ceremony held at the renowned Guildhall in London.

The selection process for these top 50 hotels was a meticulous one, taking over a year. More than 600 experts in the hospitality industry, including hotel entrepreneurs, travel journalists, teachers, and world travelers, evaluated hotels across all continents. Their judgment was based on unique qualities that made these hotels stand out from the rest.

What Makes Sujan Jawai Stand Out?

They expressed their satisfaction in creating a space where guests don’t feel confined to hotel rooms but rather experience the vast open skies, serene wilderness, and tranquility that is Sujan Jawai’s unique selling point (USP).

Their efforts to support local communities have not gone unnoticed. The hotel provides employment opportunities, conducts educational programs, and hosts veterinary camps to improve the quality of life for the local population. Sujan Jawai is also part of a broader rewilding project, working tirelessly to restore natural habitats and protect biodiversity.

A Favorite Among Celebrities

Sujan Jawai’s reputation for privacy and tranquility has attracted many celebrities. Bollywood stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt have stayed at the hotel, as well as political figures like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, and South Indian actor Allu Arjun. The serene environment and complete privacy make it a popular destination for celebrities from around the world.

Staying at Sujan Jawai comes with exclusivity. A night in the Rock Suite for two starts at ₹1.25 lakh, which includes meals and two safaris. Guests also contribute ₹2,500 per person for wildlife conservation efforts.

World Tourism Day 2024, celebrated globally on September 27th, will focus on the theme “Tourism and Peace”, emphasizing how travel acts as a bridge between cultures, fosters reconciliation, and promotes global harmony. The celebration aims to raise awareness of the critical role tourism plays in cultural exchange, economic development, and environmental sustainability. This year’s event will be hosted in Tbilisi, Georgia, a country known for its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and renowned hospitality.

Importance of Tourism

Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, contributing significantly to global GDP and supporting millions of jobs. Beyond its economic benefits, tourism fosters international cooperation, accelerates economic progress, and helps preserve cultural heritage. However, when left unchecked, tourism can lead to the degradation of local environments and traditions, making sustainable tourism practices essential in today’s world.

The History of World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day was established in 1980 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The date, September 27, commemorates the adoption of the UN Tourism Statutes in 1970, a pivotal moment in the history of international tourism. Since its inception, the day has served as a platform to highlight tourism’s role in cultural and economic development while encouraging responsible and sustainable practices. Each year, a new host nation and theme are selected to reflect the current global priorities and challenges related to tourism.

Significance of World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day is more than just a celebration; it is a call to action. The day seeks to highlight the social, cultural, economic, and environmental value of tourism. By promoting responsible tourism practices, the event encourages the global community to ensure that tourism benefits local populations, protects the environment, and preserves cultural heritage. The UNWTO points out that tourism also plays a crucial role in promoting peace, bringing people from diverse backgrounds together and challenging stereotypes.

World Tourism Day 2024 Theme: “Tourism and Peace”

This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace,” underlines how tourism can serve as a force for unity and reconciliation. By bringing people from different cultures and backgrounds together, tourism fosters mutual respect, understanding, and empathy, helping to reduce conflict and bridge divides. Travel experiences encourage collaboration and communication, vital components in building peaceful societies.

In a world that is increasingly interconnected yet often divided, tourism can play a pivotal role in promoting peace by providing opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and understanding. The UNWTO states, “World Tourism Day 2024, under the theme ‘Tourism and Peace,’ aims to highlight the vital role of this sector in fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures and in supporting reconciliation processes.”
