The Indian Postal Department has decided to discontinue the registered post service—operational since the British era—and merge it with the Speed Post service. A circular has already been issued to postmasters nationwide, instructing them to make all necessary amendments by July 31. From September 1, 2025, registered post will be officially discontinued, leaving speed post as the only option for sending important documents and parcels.

Registered post was introduced in 1854 during British rule, under the India Post Office Act implemented by Lord Dalhousie. Prior to that, in 1766, Warren Hastings had initiated Company Mail under the East India Company.
