The iconic red-and-blue suit worn by Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2 is set to go under the hammer, with bidding expected to surpass $100,000 (approx. £78,000).
The auction, announced on Thursday, will take place on September 4, and has already generated buzz among collectors and film enthusiasts.
Auction Details
The starting bid for the suit has been set at $50,000, but estimates suggest it could fetch between $100,000 and $200,000 given its historical and pop culture significance. The costume was created by Frontline Design in collaboration with James Acheson, the Academy Award-winning costume designer.
Features of the Suit
Specially crafted for Spider-Man 2 (2004), the suit introduced several updates compared to the 2002 version:
- Darker blue tones for a bolder look.
- More defined muscular shape.
- Slightly smaller eye lenses.
- Larger chest emblem.
Constructed from red and dark blue stretch spandex, the bodysuit includes integrated boots and hidden zippers for practicality. According to PropStore Auction, which is managing the sale, some parts of the suit sustained damage during filming but were later repaired.
A Piece of Spider-Man Legacy
The costume was prominently featured in Spider-Man 2 and also appeared in scenes from Spider-Man 3.
In Spider-Man 2, directed by Sam Raimi, Peter Parker struggles with personal sacrifice while facing Dr. Otto Octavius (Doc Ock), played by Alfred Molina. The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest superhero films of all time, holding a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Maguire’s performance as Spider-Man left a lasting legacy, paving the way for later interpretations by Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland. Holland currently portrays the character in the Marvel-Sony collaboration, with a fourth film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release in 2026.
