Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing his leadership as “balanced and wise,” while reaffirming Moscow’s close ties with New Delhi. Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Forum in Sochi, Putin highlighted India’s independent decision-making and resilience in the face of external pressures.
Calling the India-Russia partnership “special,” Putin referred to PM Modi as his “friend,” noting that he feels at ease in their interactions. He hailed Modi as a “balanced, wise, and nationally oriented leader” who safeguards India’s sovereignty in global affairs.
Putin commended India’s refusal to bow to US pressure to halt Russian oil imports, calling it a demonstration of sovereign policy. He said New Delhi’s decision has helped India secure its energy needs while reinforcing its independent global stance.
Addressing concerns over the new tariffs imposed by Washington, Putin said India’s losses from US duties would be offset by Russian crude oil exports. “Such actions will only strengthen India’s prestige as a sovereign nation,” he remarked, stressing that Russia would continue to stand by India during its trade disputes with the United States.
When asked about American efforts to persuade India to reduce reliance on Russian energy, Putin firmly replied that Prime Minister Modi “would never take such a step.” He added that rejecting Russian energy would harm India’s interests, and expressed confidence that India’s leadership and people would “never allow humiliation or compromise.”
Putin’s comments came just a day after the US, under the Donald Trump administration, announced fresh tariffs on Indian imports—effective October 1—targeting pharmaceutical products, furniture, and heavy trucks. Moscow’s open support underscores Russia’s readiness to deepen its strategic and economic partnership with India as New Delhi navigates its growing trade tensions with Washington.
