Shehan Karunatilaka, the Sri Lankan writer, has received the 2022 Booker Prize for his novel “The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida”.
The novel has been recognized for its scope and the humorous narrative tactics that bring to fore the fact that concepts of corruption, race-baiting, and cronyism will never work.
It is the story of a war photographer who has woken up dead in a celestial visa office. He has “seven moons” to try and solve his death’s mystery and help unveil photos which will rattle war-torn Sri Lanka.
With this, Karunatilaka became the second Sri Lankan to receive this prestigious literary award.
The first Sri Lankan to receive this award is Michael Ondaatje, who won the award in 1992 for his work “The English Patient”.
