A Bold Vision for India’s Sporting Future

In a significant step towards transforming India’s sporting landscape, the Gujarat government has earmarked ₹1,331 crore for the sports sector, with a clear vision to develop Ahmedabad into an “Olympic-ready” city. This ambitious allocation, announced in the state assembly, is part of a broader strategy to position Gujarat—and India—as a serious contender for hosting global sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.

The move reflects a growing national aspiration: to not just participate in global sports, but to host them at the highest level.

Massive Investment in World-Class Infrastructure

A key highlight of the plan is the development of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave near the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. Spread across hundreds of acres, this mega sports hub will feature Olympic-standard facilities, including a large aquatic centre, tennis complex, and indoor arenas with capacities ranging from 12,000 to 24,000 spectators.

In addition, around ₹500 crore has been specifically allocated to make Ahmedabad “Olympic-ready,” focusing on infrastructure that can host international competitions and serve as high-performance training centres even after major events.

Plans also include the creation of an Olympic Village capable of accommodating thousands of athletes, signalling long-term preparedness for mega sporting events.

Beyond Infrastructure: Building a Sports Culture

The initiative goes beyond stadiums and facilities. Gujarat is simultaneously investing in grassroots development through programmes like school-level sports training, which already engages over 1.29 lakh children across hundreds of schools.

Events like the Khel Mahakumbh have also seen massive participation growth over the years, indicating a rising sports culture in the state.

This dual approach—developing both infrastructure and talent—aims to create a sustainable sporting ecosystem rather than just event-ready venues.

The Larger Olympic Ambition

Ahmedabad’s transformation is closely tied to India’s long-term ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games. The city is being positioned as the primary host, with urban planning, transport, and sports infrastructure all aligned toward this goal.

The scale of investment also signals confidence. With a total allocation of over ₹2,000 crore for sports and youth development, Gujarat is making one of the largest state-level investments in sports infrastructure in India.

The Way Ahead

While the vision is ambitious, its success will depend on execution—timely completion of infrastructure, integration with urban planning, and sustained investment in athlete development. If realised effectively, Ahmedabad could emerge as India’s first truly global sports city.

More importantly, this initiative marks a shift in India’s sporting mindset—from chasing medals to building ecosystems capable of hosting the world.
