On December 14, 1971, an enemy formation of Sabre jets launched a sudden attack on Srinagar Airfield. Sekhon’s aircraft was delayed on the ground due to dust clouds obscuring the runway. By the time he could take off, the assault was already underway. Alone and outnumbered, Sekhon took to the skies in his Gnat fighter jet, engaging the hostile aircraft in a fierce dogfight above the airbase. Though ultimately he did not survive, his bravery forced the enemy to abort their mission, significantly protecting the airfield and nearby town. For his valor, Sekhon became the first Indian Air Force officer to receive the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award.
