The Delhi Metro recently unveiled a fresh, modern look as part of its Phase 4 expansion, marking a significant milestone with the rollout of 52 new “Make in India” train sets. Manufactured by Alstom at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, these RS17 train sets are designed with advanced automation, eco-friendly materials, and enhanced passenger comfort. They feature six-car configurations, wider 3.2-meter cars, and are engineered to operate at speeds of up to 95 km/h, making them faster than previous models.
Key technological upgrades in these trains include the use of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling, which enables driverless operations. This system allows for a Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), meaning trains can operate entirely autonomously, enhancing efficiency and safety across the network. CBTC will also help reduce train intervals, potentially increasing the frequency and capacity of services. Additionally, the design emphasizes passenger safety and convenience, incorporating wider seats, improved ventilation, and optimized lighting.
The trains are expected to serve expanded lines in the Delhi Metro network, specifically the Pink, Magenta, and the newly introduced Silver (or Golden) line, which will connect Aerocity to Tughlakabad. The deployment of these new trains aims to reduce congestion, facilitate faster commuting across the National Capital Region, and support Delhi Metro’s commitment to sustainable urban transport.
