The 19th edition of the Divya Kala Mela was recently inaugurated in Visakhapatnam by Governor S. Abdul Nazeer, with the presence of prominent dignitaries, including Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar. This unique event, dedicated to empowering artisans with disabilities (Divyang artisans), serves as a platform to promote inclusivity while showcasing the artistic talents of these individuals. Through this initiative, the event aims to foster economic empowerment and societal integration of Divyang artists.
Financial Support and Initiatives
A key highlight of the mela was the distribution of concessional loans to Divyang beneficiaries, as part of a broader effort to support financial independence among artisans. The National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) provided loans worth ₹40 lakh to 10 beneficiaries. These loans will help artisans with disabilities to start or expand their businesses, thereby contributing to their economic empowerment. Such initiatives are vital steps towards financial autonomy for individuals with disabilities.
Showcasing Talents Across India
More than 100 Divyang artisans from 20 states and Union Territories participated in the mela, presenting a diverse range of handcrafted products. From intricately designed handicrafts and handloom items to delicious packaged foods, the artisans showcased their skills and creativity. This event strongly aligns with the government’s “Vocal for Local” campaign, which promotes locally made products and boosts the local economy. By providing a national platform for these artisans, Divya Kala Mela encourages their entrepreneurial spirit and helps them gain financial independence through their work.
Event Details and Cultural Experiences
The mela is open from September 19 to 29 at Marine Ground, Andhra University, running daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Visitors to the fair can experience cultural performances by Divyang artists, who bring their talent and vibrancy to the stage. Additionally, food stalls featuring regional delicacies from across India provide a rich culinary experience for attendees. The event not only highlights the artistic capabilities of Divyang artisans but also offers a cultural immersion for visitors.
A Commitment to Inclusion and Empowerment
During the inaugural event, Dr. Virendra Kumar, alongside other dignitaries, emphasized the importance of fostering economic opportunities for people with disabilities. They reiterated their commitment to supporting hygiene, social welfare, and community development, all integral aspects of the mela. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusion and how such platforms can bridge the gap for marginalized communities.
