India has achieved its best-ever performance at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026, with all four members of its team winning gold medals and the country finishing joint first in the global medal tally. The Olympiad, held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to 19, witnessed participation from 363 students representing 93 countries, making it one of the largest editions of the prestigious competition.
This is the first time India has secured an all-gold haul at the International Chemistry Olympiad, placing it alongside China, Vietnam, and the Individual Participants Group B (Russia) at the top of the medal standings.

What is the International Chemistry Olympiad?
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is the world’s most prestigious chemistry competition for secondary school students. Established in 1968, it is one of the International Science Olympiads and tests participants through demanding theoretical and laboratory examinations that assess analytical thinking, scientific reasoning and experimental skills.
Each participating country can send a team of up to four students, selected through a rigorous national process.
India’s Journey to the World Stage
In India, students first qualify through a series of national-level examinations conducted under the guidance of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). The selected students undergo intensive residential training and multiple rounds of evaluation before the final four-member team is chosen to represent the country internationally.
The 2026 contingent’s outstanding performance marks India’s finest result in its 27 appearances at the International Chemistry Olympiad.
