Football is set to witness one of its most remarkable full-circle moments as Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal prepare to face each other in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, nearly two decades after an iconic photograph unknowingly linked their destinies.
In late 2007, a then 20-year-old Messi—already regarded as one of Barcelona’s brightest young talents—posed for a charity photoshoot with a six-month-old baby named Lamine Yamal. The image, which showed Messi gently holding the infant in a small blue bathtub, would later become one of football’s most cherished photographs.
Now, almost 20 years later, the two stars are set to meet on football’s biggest stage when Argentina face Spain in the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Road to the Final
Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the final with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England, inspired by Messi’s two assists. Spain, the reigning European champions, secured their berth after defeating France 2-0 in the semifinal, with Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro finding the net. The final will mark the first-ever competitive meeting between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

The Story Behind the Viral Photograph
The famous photograph traces its origins to a 2007 charity campaign organized by Spanish newspaper Diario Sport in collaboration with UNICEF. As part of the initiative, families from Catalonia were entered into a lucky draw for the opportunity to have their children photographed alongside FC Barcelona players for a charity calendar.
Lamine Yamal’s family was selected, and the photoshoot took place inside the dressing room at Camp Nou. During the session, Messi was asked to pose with the six-month-old Yamal in a bathtub. The photograph was published in the 2008 charity calendar before fading from public attention.
Photo Resurfaced During Euro 2024

The image returned to global prominence during UEFA Euro 2024, when Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared it on Instagram with the caption:
“The beginning of two legends.”
The post quickly went viral as Yamal emerged as one of football’s brightest young talents.
A Symbolic Passing of the Torch
The upcoming World Cup final is more than just a battle between Argentina and Spain. It also symbolizes a meeting of two generations—one featuring Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, and the other showcasing Lamine Yamal, one of the game’s most exciting young stars.
What began as a chance encounter during a charity photoshoot nearly two decades ago will now culminate in a historic showdown on football’s grandest stage, adding another unforgettable chapter to FIFA World Cup history.
