Top 10 Most Liveable Cities in 2026

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest Global Liveability Index has named the world’s most liveable cities. To find out what makes them stand out beyond the rankings, we asked residents to share the everyday rituals, neighbourhoods and local favourites that define life in their hometowns.

Copenhagen retains the top spot for a second consecutive year in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2026 Global Liveability Index.

The annual ranking assesses 173 cities across five categories—stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure—to identify those offering the highest quality of life. Vienna, Melbourne, Sydney and Zurich round out this year’s top five, reinforcing Europe’s strong performance while highlighting Australia’s continued success.

Named the world’s most liveable city for the second year running, the Danish capital earned perfect scores for stability, education and infrastructure, along with one of the index’s highest scores for culture and environment. Residents say that translates into a city where cycling, swimming and time outdoors are simply part of everyday life.

2. Vienna

After topping the index for several years, Vienna remains close behind in second place, buoyed by perfect scores for healthcare and education. Residents say its appeal lies in the ease of daily life, whether that’s getting around on public transport, walking between neighbourhoods or lingering in cafés.

“Even though it’s a metropolis, you always have the possibility to slow down,” she said. “Whether it’s in a coffeehouse, a park or by the Danube, time just runs differently in Vienna.”

3. Melbourne

Melbourne edged out Sydney to claim third place, thanks to one of the index’s highest scores for culture and environment. Residents say the city’s character is found in its neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct identity.

4. Sydney

Sydney matched Melbourne’s overall score but ranked fourth after scoring lower for culture and environment. Residents say its winning combination is easy access to nature, diverse neighbourhoods and an outdoor lifestyle that rarely waits for the weekend.

5. Zurich

Zurich slips from joint second to fifth this year, but residents say its blend of efficiency, cleanliness and easy access to nature continues to define daily life.

6. Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva continues to rank among the world’s best cities in 2026 for its exceptional quality of life, safety, and global influence. Home to major international organizations, it offers world-class healthcare, efficient public transport, and stunning lakeside scenery. Its blend of diplomacy, innovation, and natural beauty makes it one of the world’s most livable cities.

7. Osaka, Japan

Osaka secures its place among the best cities in 2026 thanks to its vibrant culture, outstanding public transport, and renowned food scene. The city combines modern urban development with rich traditions, offering residents and visitors an excellent quality of life. Its thriving economy and warm hospitality further strengthen its global appeal.

8. Adelaide, Australia

Adelaide stands out in 2026 for its affordable lifestyle, clean environment, and excellent healthcare and education systems. Known for its festivals, wineries, and green spaces, the city provides a relaxed yet dynamic urban experience. Strong sustainability initiatives and high livability continue to make Adelaide a top global destination.

9. Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver remains one of the world’s best cities in 2026 due to its breathtaking natural surroundings, multicultural society, and high standard of living.
