India has a new Army Chief. General Dhiraj Seth on Tuesday assumed charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after an illustrious career spanning over four decades in the Indian Army. The change of command comes at a crucial time as the Army continues its drive towards modernisation, self-reliance, and enhanced operational preparedness amid evolving regional and global security challenges.

A distinguished officer of the Armoured Corps, General Seth brings nearly 40 years of military experience across operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional roles. Prior to taking over as Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, where he played a key role in force transformation and long-term capability planning.

A Career Marked by Leadership

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, General Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over the course of his career, he has held several important command and staff appointments, including command of operational formations along India’s western front. He has also led both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, giving him extensive experience in handling diverse operational responsibilities.

General Seth has undergone advanced military training in India and abroad, including the Higher Command Course, the National Defence College, and the prestigious Command and Staff Course in Paris, reflecting his broad strategic outlook and expertise in contemporary military affairs.

A Historic Appointment

General Seth’s elevation is significant as he becomes the first officer from the Armoured Corps to serve as Army Chief since General Shankar Roy Chowdhary, who retired in 1997. Defence experts view his appointment as an important milestone, particularly at a time when the Army is focusing on technological transformation, indigenous capability development, and future warfare concepts.

Challenges Ahead

As the head of the 1.3 million-strong Indian Army, General Seth assumes office at a time when the force is accelerating military modernisation, expanding indigenous defence capabilities under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, and strengthening preparedness along India’s sensitive borders.

His tenure is also expected to focus on the integration of advanced technologies, jointness among the three armed services, and the implementation of ongoing military reforms aimed at making the Indian Army more agile, technology-driven, and future-ready.

A New Chapter for the Indian Army

The formal change of command marks not only a transition in leadership but also the beginning of a new phase in the Indian Army’s evolution. With decades of operational experience, strategic insight, and a strong focus on transformation, General Dhiraj Seth takes over the reins at a time when India’s security environment is becoming increasingly complex.

As the nation welcomes its 31st Army Chief, expectations are high that his leadership will further strengthen the Army’s combat readiness while steering it towards greater technological capability, operational excellence, and self-reliance in the years ahead.
