What is the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI)?

Administered by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the ICAI serves as the country’s sole licensing and regulatory body for financial audits and the accounting profession. The guidelines released by ICAI must be implemented by the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) and all other accounting and finance organizations in India.
Why Is July 1 Celebrated As CA Day?
The tradition of celebrating CA Day on July 1 dates back to the foundation of ICAI. Before India’s independence, the British Government regulated accounts under the Companies Act and later introduced a diploma program in accounting for auditors. By 1930, the Government of India maintained a Register of Accountants, listing those qualified to work as auditors across the country.
However, the profession lacked effective norms and regulations, prompting the establishment of an expert committee in 1948. This committee recommended the creation of an autonomous accounting body to oversee the profession, leading to the enactment of the Chartered Accountants Act in 1949. Thus, ICAI was born, and July 1 was designated as Chartered Accountants Day to honor this milestone.
