Kondava Caves History

Kondana caves is a group of 16 Buddhist Caves. These caves were digged in first century B.C. These ancient caves are constructed with wooden patterns over them. Kondana consists of many stupas and sculptures which often give tourists a sight of the ancient lifestyle of Buddhist Monks. Its astonishing architecture mesmerises people.

It is said that back in early 1900, an earthquake destroyed most parts of the Kondana caves including its floor, front entrance and many stupas. But the wooden patterns are still intact on the caves and gives it a beautiful look.

Kondava Caves and its beautiful sets

Chatiya: It is kind of a prayer hall ,carved on the sides with the Buddhist rail pattern and a Buddhist Stupa if found there.

Vihara: It is an open space like veranda which is totally destroyed except the left end. You can see  arches, pillars and doors along with a string of statues and carvings on the walls there.

Plain Vihara: It is made up of nine cells, much ruined, especially in front, but it had probably three doors.

The cave 4: It also consists of nine cells at the back and it looks like a natural hollow under the cliff. Beyond them is a tank, now filled with mud, then two cells under a deep ledge of over-hanging rock, and, lastly, a small cistern.
