West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, contesting from Nandigram, has been known as a daring politician who uprooted the three decade old rule of communists from Bengal after separating from Congress and has also been vocal against PM Narendra Modi. Mamata Banerjee is serving as the 8th and current CM of West Bengal since 2011 and is the woman to hold this office in state.

She floated the All India Trinamool Congress in 1998 after separating from Congress and became its chairperson.

She has served as Minister of Railways, the first woman to hold the position.

She has been the first female minister of coal. Also, she has been the minister of human resource development, minister of human resource development, youth affairs and sports, women and child development.

She garnered fame after opposing the erstwhile land acquisition policies for industrialisation of communist government in West Bengal meant for creating special economic zones at Singur.

In 2011 Banerjee defeated the 34-year-old old Community Party of India (Marxist)-led Left government, which was the world’s longest serving democratically elected Communist Government.
