Gujarat Day & Maharashtra Day 2021: Know the history of formation two states …

Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day is celebrated each year on May 1 to celebrate the statehood of formation of two states, namely, Maharashtra and Gujarat which were formed on May 1, 1960

Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed on May 1, 1960.

It was in this year when May Day is remembered as ‘Maharashtra Day’ and ‘Gujarat Day’ to mark the date when these two states achieved statehood. This move took place after early Bombay was divided on the basis of language.

The States Reorganisation Act, 1956 defined the state boundaries within India on the basis of languages.

As the Bombay state formed as a consequence of this act, had different languages, the Sankyuta Maharashtra Samiti was at the forefront of the movement to divide the Bombay State into two states; one with people primarily speaking Gujarati and Kutchhi and the other with people speaking Marathi and Konkani.

Eventually, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed as a result of this movement.
